Study method and observations
The method used consisted of subjecting the food to a period of three minutes inside the microwave device, followed by a detailed examination of possible plastics in the form of microparticles and nanoparticles.
The selection of the three-minute warm-up interval is not arbitrary. This is the period of time commonly used in everyday culinary practice, therefore reflecting a realistic microwave usage situation.
The detailed analysis carried out by the researchers revealed a considerable concentration of plastics, notably those composed of polypropylene or polyethylene, in containers containing water or dairy products, that is, liquids.
This observation indicates a predisposition of plastics of releasing substances in greater quantities when they come into contact with heated liquids.
The presence of these plastic components, when combined with the liquid nature of the contents of the containers, can potentially lead to greater transfer of plastic substances into these foods. On the other hand, the concentration of plastic substances was relatively lower in tests carried out with solid foods.
