How to Create and Manage Chat Folders in Telegram

For most messaging apps, managing chats should be the most complex task at hand. Especially in an app like Telegram where your chats are not limited to individuals or groups, but channels and Telegram bots. Telegram certainly recognized the need when it introduced the chat folder feature.

Of course, you can pin your favorite conversations so that you never miss them. But creating chat folders allows you to organize and categorize your conversations more easily. This article will show you how to create and manage chat folders in Telegram app. So let’s get started.

How to Create Chat Folder in Telegram

First, let’s see how to create a chat folder in Telegram. I will use an Android phone to demonstrate the process, as the Telegram app works pretty much the same on every platform.

Stage 1: Open Telegram app on your phone and use the hamburger menu in the top left to navigate Settings.

Step 2: Now go to Folders option and tap on Create New Folder.

Stage 3: Next, enter a suitable name for the chat folder and click the Add Chat button to start incorporating chats into your folder.

You can include chats by type or individually. When done, click the checkmark to continue.

Step 4: Finally, tap the Save button to create the chat folder.

And that’s it. Once created you will find your chat folder on the main screen of the app. You can repeat the above steps to create more chat folders in Telegram.

Adding or Removing Chats to a Folder

If you’ve added chats by type, all conversations that fall into that category will be added automatically. Naturally, you’ll want to add or remove some chats from the folder in the future. Well, this is pretty easy to do. Here’s how.

Stage 1: Open the Telegram app and go to Settings. There, go to Folders and open your folder to modify it.

Step 2: Now tap on Remove Chats option to remove some chats from your folder.

You can choose to exclude muted, Read, or Archived chats. Or you can exclude them individually by selecting them from the list. When done, click the checkmark to continue.

Stage 3: In the Chat folder, you will find the removed conversations under Excluded Chats. Finally, tap on the Save option to confirm.

Similarly, you can add new chats to your folder by tapping Add Chat and selecting new conversations from the list.

How to Manage Chat Folders in Telegram

Telegram app shows all chat folders on home page as tabs. You can easily switch between these tabs to access your folders.

To change the order of chat folders, press and hold any chat folder and select Reorder from the menu that appears. Now tap and hold the chat folder and move it left or right. Finally, click Done to save the changes.

Similarly, tap and hold the chat folder tab and select Edit folder to change a folder. This will take you to the edit page. Here you can rename the folder, add or remove chats, or delete the folder itself.

Bonus: How to Pin Chat in Telegram

Apart from creating folders, Telegram also allows you to pin specific conversations inside the folder so that your favorite chats are not lost in the chaos. Pinning chats inside the folder keeps the chats at the top for quick access.

To pin a chat in Telegram for Android, tap and hold the chat and use the three-dot menu at the top to select the Pin option.

Similarly, iPhone users can swipe right on the chat and tap Pin to unpin the chat.
