Meta has just launched a new feature in its messenger that allows use the same WhatsApp account on two different smartphones, making it possible to link up to four devices. Furthermore, this new functionality does not require the main device to be actively connected to the internet.

Even if they are on different devices, all messages and calls made on any smartphone remain end-to-end encrypted. This serves to ensure the security of users’ information.

Launched in November 2022, the feature was initially available only to a select few users. Now, all beta users with access to the latest Android beta version on the Google Play Store can use it.

There is no forecast for when the beta mode for WhatsApp users will be available for iOS. However, the intention is that the feature will be available to those who use Apple devices soon.

Connecting a WhatsApp account on two smartphones

This option of connecting a WhatsApp account on two smartphones is called mode companion or partner. But after all, how do you connect more than one device to the same account?

Making the connection is very simple, just have the second – or third, or fourth – device connect to the main device’s account using the QR code created on the second smartphone. That’s it! Now just use the messenger as normal.

For those who have WhatsApp on their iPhone, it is also possible to link the account to another smartphone, as long as it is Android.

It’s worth noting that there are still some limitations to this beta mode. The new feature is not capable of generating broadcast lists, nor does it update the status of the new linked device. The main functionality of companion mode is exclusively to allow the user to switch the account between multiple devices throughout the day.
