The cause of the Lapedo Boy’s death remains a mystery, as there are no signs of illness or fall. In turn, archaeologist Ana Cristina Araújo suggests possibilities such as mushroom poisoning or drowning.
However, the most enigmatic aspect was the almost intact preservation of the remains, which caught the attention of the scientific community and culminated in a revolution in the studies of human evolution.

The discovery occurred in 1998, when the owners of the land were carrying out excavations to build terraces. The child’s skeleton was found unexpectedly and its anatomy intrigued researchers.
João Zilhão, leader of the team responsible for the discovery, highlighted that the body proportion of the Menino de Lapedo resembled that of the neanderthals, although it presented modern characteristics. This finding challenged the understanding of the time, which considered Neanderthals and modern humans as distinct species.
The discovery suggested the possibility of crossing between the two species, something completely discarded previously. As if that were not enough, detailed analysis of the burial revealed a complex ritual, with the child being placed on burnt pine branches and wrapped in an ocher-dyed shroud.
The theories that emerged from the discovery pointed to two main possibilities: the child was the result of a relationship between a Neanderthal and a modern human, or interbreeding between these species was more frequent than previously believed.
Radiocarbon dating established that the Lapedo Boy was around 29,000 years old, as already mentioned, which supported the second theory.
Subsequent studies, prompted by the discovery of the Lapedo Boy, redefined the understanding of Neanderthals. Now, they are considered less as a distinct species and more as part of the human ancestral lineage.
The research also revealed that up to 4% of DNA Neanderthals are present in European and Asian genomes, demystifying previous ideas about the complete extinction of these groups.
In this scenario, the wealth of information derived from the study of the Boy of Lapedo enriched the understanding of human evolution. Instead of a linear narrative, the findings suggest a complex web of crossings and interactions between different human groups over time.
