Guide to Change Chat Theme Color in Facebook Messenger

Alongside a new logo, Facebook recently introduced several new features for Facebook Messenger. These include disappearing mode, custom emoji reactions, selfie stickers, and the ability to change chat theme color. Are you excited to change the theme color in Messenger chats? Facebook Messenger offers two types of themes – dark/light mode and chat themes. The first applies to the entire Messenger interface, including all chats. And the latter is limited to individual chats. Chat themes change the background color of the conversation along with the color of the chat bubbles.

Things to Know About Messenger Chat Themes

• Any participant in the chat can change the Messenger theme. And the same will be reflected for all participants.
• When a theme is changed, the same will be mentioned in the chat to notify the chat participants.
• It is not possible to change Messenger chat themes for all messages.
• Chat themes only apply to individual chats. So if you want to apply the same theme to more than one chat or to all messages, you will have to repeat the steps for all chats one by one.
• The dark or light theme will be applied to the entire Messenger interface.

Here are the steps to change the theme color in Messenger on PC and then mobile.

How to Change Messenger Theme Color on PC

Launch the Messenger desktop app or website. Open the chat for which you want to change the theme color. Click on the (i) icon at the top. A sidebar will open. Click on change theme.

Click any color to change the chat color. Click on the items in the first row to change the background as well. You may not be able to see the background on PC. But if you open the Messenger app on your mobile device, you will see a new background for your chat.

How to Change Messenger Theme Color on Android, iPhone and iPad

To get started, you must launch the Messenger app and open the chat. Tap the name of the person at the top. You can even tap the (i) icon at the top. Tap on Theme on the next screen.

Select the theme or gradient color you want from the screen that opens.

What Happens When You Change The Messenger Theme?

Changing the theme means no such thing. It just changes the aesthetic of the chat and gives it a new look. As soon as you click or tap on the new theme color, the same will change for all chat participants. Each participant will see a message notification in the chat that XYZ has changed the chat theme.

Change Messenger Theme to Default or Classic on PC and Mobile

If you don’t like the new colors or someone else has changed the Messenger theme, you can revert to the classic theme.

To do this, click Change theme from the right sidebar of Messenger on PC. When the color picker appears, click on the blue color to return the Messenger theme to normal.

Similarly, on mobile, tap the name of the participant in the chat thread. Tap Themes. Then tap the blue color. This will revert any applied theme to the default or classic theme of Messenger.

How to Switch Between Light and Dark Mode in Facebook Messenger?

Whether you’re an iOS/iPadOS or Android user, the Facebook Messenger app all supports dark mode.

Open the Messenger app on your phone or tablet to switch to dark mode. Tap the profile picture icon at the top. You will be redirected to Messenger settings. Enable the toggle next to Dark mode on Android. Turn the switch off to return to the light mode.

Tap on Dark mode on iPhone and iPad. You will be shown three options – Light, Dark and System. Select Dark mode to activate or select On to switch from dark mode to it. If you want Messenger to apply a dark or light theme according to your phone’s dark mode program, you should choose System. Therefore, when you enable Dark mode on your device, Messenger will automatically switch to dark mode.

Troubleshooting: Messenger Chat Themes Not Working

If the themes are not yet in your Messenger, you should update the Facebook Messenger app. If that doesn’t fix the problem, uninstall and reinstall the app. See our explanation of what happens when you uninstall Facebook Messenger.
