A privacy and protection of personal data is one of the most recurring themes in the debate about the digital universe today.

The results of a simple Google search can expose many people’s information, but this can be avoided.

To solve this problem and give people the autonomy not to disclose their data on the internet, Google created a feature to request the exclusion of this content from search results.

The form was created in 2022, with the purpose of guaranteeing greater privacy. Through it, it is possible to request the removal of sensitive data, such as telephone number, email, CPF and even home address.

The possibilities offered by Google’s new feature go a little further. With it, it is possible to exclude content that may be embarrassing or cause harm to users.

This category includes unauthorized photos and videos, for example, as well as images of child abuse, dissemination of pornographic records for revenge and other similar purposes.

For each request made, Google evaluates the request and the removal decision is at the company’s discretion.

It can deny, for example, requests that compromise public access to information, such as links to government websites.

How to make a deletion request on Google

The request process is very simple. See below how to do it:

  1. The first step is to access the data deletion form;

  2. Then, choose the option “The content contains personal information” and enter your country of residence;

  3. The form will ask for more data about what appears in the link or search result. Report everything correctly;

  4. Once this is done, fill in the contact information and provide more information about the content, with links, search terms, screenshots, etc.;

  5. Then, just click “Send” and wait for the response.

Google data removal

One of the main questions is what data can be deleted from Google. The company adopts as a reference a list with the following information:

  • Address;

  • Identity document numbers;

  • Telephone numbers or email;

  • Bank account;

  • Number of credit card;

  • Images of handwritten signature or identification document;

  • Login credentials;

  • Medical and other histories.

In each request, the user can attach up to 1,000 website URLs or search results that provide personal data.

Google also tends to question whether the disclosure is linked to the practice of doxxing — threats, harassment or blackmail.

With so many scammers and malicious people out there, it is important to keep an eye out and ensure the security of your own data. Enjoy!
