For the first time, Apple surpasses Samsung and leads smartphone sales

For the first time in 13 years, the Apple achieved leadership in smartphone sales, surpassing Samsung, according to data from market analysis firms IDC and Canalys.

In 2023, Apple recorded the sale of 234.6 million smartphones, while Samsung came in second place, with 226.6 million units sold, according to data collected by IDC.

This change marks a significant milestone in the competition between the two giants of technology on the market and, certainly, it is an important record for the North American brand.

The South Korean technology giant took second place after a long period at the top. This hasn’t happened since 2010, when the brand surpassed Nokia’s reign.

This is also the first time that Apple has taken the lead in smartphone sales. The brand caused Samsung (2nd place), Xiaomi (3rd place), OPPO (4th place) and Transsion (5th place) to fall behind in 2023.

Apple reports solid sales growth

Apple stands out as the only brand in the Top 3 to record positive annual growth, achieving a 3.7% increase in sales of smartphones from 2022 to 2023.

This continued success is largely attributed to the growing demand for premium devices, which now represent more than 20% of the market.

This growth is driven by aggressive trade-in offers and interest-free financing plans. In contrast, Samsung faced a significant 13.6% drop in its smartphone sales over the same period.

The research highlights the competitive scenario in the Android segment, with brands such as Google, Huawei, Honor and Xiaomi, suggesting intense competition.

The future of these brands in the market will depend on the strategies adopted, such as Apple’s planned launches with the iPhone 15 and 16 lines, and Samsung’s efforts with the new Galaxy S24 and improved intermediate devices.
