Excluded from Apple: which iPhones will stop being updated in 2024?

Every year, the Apple launches news and updates the operating system of your devices. In 2024, of course, it will be no different. Expectations are high with the arrival of iOS 18, which will be announced to accompany the iPhone 16 line.

Whenever a new system is launched, some old device from the brand ends up being left out of the update because it is no longer compatible with the features presented.

The company usually adopts specific criteria to decide which devices will receive the update and which will be excluded from the list.

This year, with the implementation of iOS 17, models with A11 Bionic processors were left out of the news. We’re talking about the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. What to expect, then, for next year?

Apple has not yet released any forecast for the list of devices that will be left out of the update in 2024. However, judging by the criteria adopted in 2023, it is possible to say that devices with the A12 Bionic processor have a high chance of be excluded for the time being.

This means that cell phones like iPhone XR, iPhone XS and XS Max should be the ones that stop receiving updates next year. Launched in 2018, they were supported by the brand for a period of six years.

The new operating system, iOS 18, is expected to be released during the next edition of WWDC, which is Apple’s annual developer conference.

My iPhone was left out, what now?

As this period approaches, many users of the brand’s devices are starting to get scared. If your iPhone is left out of the news, be aware that it will no longer receive security optimizations and certain functions.

This does not mean, however, that the device will stop working; on the contrary, it will continue to operate normally. So, you don’t need to despair to change, buy another cell phone or discard the old one.

What will happen is that, after a certain time, some applications will no longer be updated and, with the lack of support and security updates, the cell phone will be susceptible to technical problems and possible intrusions.

Changing cell phones, sooner or later, will be necessary; however, that doesn’t mean you have to do it as soon as iOS 18 is released. It is possible to wait a little longer and carefully analyze the market options.
