Neuralink is a neurotechnology company founded by Elon Muskin 2016, with the goal of developing chips, which are, in effect, interfaces that connect the brain with advanced machines. Goals being achieved
At the beginning of its journey, Neuralink focused on research and development to improve existing brain-machine interface methods.
The goal was to find a way to allow human brains to connect directly to electronic devices, opening up a world of possibilities for assisting people with disabilities and improving human performance.
In 2019, Neuralink held its first public event, unveiling its next-generation brain interface device. Called “Link,” this small device is implanted in the brain through minimally invasive surgery and is capable of recording and stimulating neural activity with high precision.
The Link is designed to communicate wirelessly with external devices, enabling direct control and communication between the brain and technology.
Neuralink and people with disabilities
One of Neuralink’s main applications for helping people with physical disabilities is through the restoration of motor function.
By recording neural activity and stimulating specific areas of the brain, the Link could potentially allow individuals with paralysis or loss of movement to control prosthetics and external devices directly with their thoughts.
Additionally, Neuralink may also play an important role in the field of neurological rehabilitation. The technology is used to stimulate and strengthen specific neurons, aiding in the recovery of motor and cognitive functions in individuals who have suffered injuries or strokes.
Advances aim to perform ‘miracles’
With Neuralink’s rapid evolution, the company is going beyond allowing humans to control prosthetics, and will be able to cure diseases that until now require a “miracle”.
We are talking about diseases such as blindness and paralysis. Yes, on May 25th, the FDA authorized Neuralink to begin testing its most advanced chips in humans.
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is a health regulatory agency in the United States. Responsible for protecting and promoting public health, the FDA controls food, drugs, medical devices, and biological products. This ensures their safety and effectiveness before they are marketed.
With this authorization, Musk’s company intends to help many people, as it itself stated:
“This is the culmination of incredible work by the Neuralink team in close collaboration with the FDA and represents an important first step that will one day enable our technology to help many more people.”
