In recent years, the constant use of cell phones, computers and electronic devices has raised concerns about the quality of human vision and the need for protection against light pollution. Prolonged exposure to these light sources has been linked to problems such as headaches and eye strain.
In view of this, some alternatives have emerged to help protect the eyes, such as goggles. blue light filterwhich have become very popular around the world.
However, there are still many doubts regarding the effectiveness of these glasses and whether they really help reduce the negative effects of exposure to light emitted by the screens of electronic devices. In this context, a new study suggests that, although many invest in their acquisition, these protectors have no proven benefits.

A recent review, published on August 17, in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, questions the effectiveness of blue filter glasses in reducing eye fatigue.
The idea of these glasses that filter blue light is based on laboratory and animal studies that suggest that blue light can damage the eyeball.
Furthermore, many opticians recommend purchasing these protective glasses for an additional fee. However, there is no clear link between exposure to blue light from computer screens and eye damage.
What does the study say?
When analyzing 17 clinical trials, which involved approximately 620 participants from six different countries, the researchers concluded that blue light blockers did not demonstrate effectiveness in alleviating eye fatigue, that is, in relieving tired eyesight.
This fatigue occurs mainly due to the decrease in blinking frequency, which occurs with the use of electronic devices, causing discomfort and eye dehydration.
According to study author Laura Downier, who is an associate professor of optometry and vision sciences at the University of Melbourne, Australia, blue light filtering lenses appear to be unnecessary for healthy adults who aim to reduce eye fatigue.
It is worth noting that this review does not conclude with complete certainty the lack of benefits of these glasses, since the studies analyzed did not have long-term follow-up. Furthermore, the American Academy of Ophthalmology indicates that it is possible to keep the light from devices reduced and in night mode or reading mode.
