When considering the multitude of possibly habitable planets in our galaxy, the task of searching for extraterrestrial beings becomes considerably challenging.
However, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in the field of astrobiology.
This is due to its ability to handle vast amounts of data, making it possible to recognize anomalies and identify signals that could be missed with traditional methods.
Looking for needles in a haystack

Bill Diamond, chief executive of the SETI Institute (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), describes the search for life beyond the Earth. Solar system like looking for a needle in a haystack.
According to Diamond, AI is playing an increasingly critical role in this quest. The technology allows for the analysis of new types of radio signals that may be emitted by advanced alien technologies.
These signals, which look more like noise in traditional methods, can be decoded by Bwhich searches for patterns within the vast amount of data.
New discoveries
An example of the application of AI in this field is the ‘Breakthrough Listen’ project, which scans a million stars and a hundred galaxies, looking for evidence of technological life.
The team employed an innovative system of artificial intelligence in analyzing telescopic data, differentiating between potential alien signals and interference.
To date, eight possible signals of extraterrestrial origin have been identified that have escaped detection by conventional analyses.
Looking for life closer to home
However, the search for extraterrestrials is not limited to long distances.
The Perseverance rover NASA has been collecting samples from the Jezero crater on Mars, and organic compounds have already been found that could indicate the presence of life on the planet.
The team at the Carnegie Institution for Science is using AI to analyze rock samples and look for signs of present or past life, distinguishing ancient living and non-living materials with nearly 90% accuracy.
Although the promising results generated by AI still need further validation, progress in efforts to search for extraterrestrial life is indisputable.
With increasing data collection and analysis, the chances of detecting alien life increase. And, as Diamond says: “Progress is measured by the scale of effort, not results yet.”
As long as there are resources for exploration, the hope of finding life extraterrestrial stays alive.
