Macrauchenia, whose name means “big neck,” was a peculiar creature that inhabited South America during the Pleistocene.

Measuring 3 meters long, 2 meters high and weighing up to a ton, its appearance resembled a cross between a camel and a giraffe, with the possible addition of a trunk.

In turn, Charles Darwin discovered Macrauchenia fossils in Argentina and presented them to paleontologist Richard Owen, famous for coining the term “dinosaur”.

Owen misclassified the creature as being related to elephants, rhinos, tapirs and hippos.

This error illustrates how the understanding of evolution and paleontology advances over time, highlighting the importance of continuous research in science and how even great scientists can make mistakes that can be corrected.

With its currently reevaluated classification, it is classified in the order Litopterna, an extinct group of ungulates with hooves on their feet.

A DNA study confirmed that their closest living relatives belong to the placental order Perissodactyla, which includes horses, rhinos and tapirs.

Hans Püschel, researcher at the Paleontological Network at the University of Chile, carried out a study on Macrauchenia in partnership with Agustín G. Martinelli, from the Department of Paleontology of Vertebrates at the Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences.

“Since the discovery of the first remains of Macrauchenia patachonica by Charles Darwin in 1834, this taxon has baffled researchers due to its peculiar anatomy. Being the best-known member of the Macraucheniidae family and with fossil records in extensive areas of South America between the middle and late Pleistocene/early Holocene, M. patachonica has been widely studied over the decades and, recently, even included in studies molecular. However, there are some elements of its skeleton that, incidentally, have not been studied.”

The riddle of the trunk

One of the most intriguing features of Macrauchenia is the possible presence of a proboscis.

The cranial anatomy of this animal suggests the existence of a proboscis, but the lack of preserved soft tissue makes this a mystery.

Some scientists have even suggested the possibility of an upper lip similar to that of elk.

“The cranial anatomy is very interesting, as it presents the nasal bone quite retracted, almost at eye level, far above and behind the skull, which could be indicative that it had a proboscis. However, in reality, we are not sure, as the soft tissue part was not preserved. We can only see that its anatomy is very peculiar. There is even a study that suggests that perhaps it had a more developed upper lip, similar to moose, but this assumption is still under discussion”, says Püschel.

Macrauchenia lived during the Pleistocene, a time of significant climate change.

As a herbivore, it probably fed on leaves and tree branches, similar to current giraffes. Its anatomy suggests adaptations for grazing in tall trees.

The study of Macrauchenia provides valuable information about Pleistocene megafauna, which included giant mammals. These creatures disappeared around 10,000 years ago, possibly due to climate changes and human activity.
