This October, the e-commerce giant Amazon and its security subsidiary, Ring, are joining forces to launch an unusual and intriguing challenge perfectly in line with the eerie atmosphere of Halloween.
The proposal is to capture a genuine alien sighting on a Ring camera. The prize? Nothing less than a million dollars for the winner.
Amazon offers more than $1 million for extraterrestrial evidence
Excitement surrounding the possible existence of extraterrestrial life has recently increased with the release of information by the United States government. Now, Amazon is also joining this wave and, at the same time, exploring commercial opportunities in this field.

The contestant who comes up with the most convincing and chilling alien sighting, even if it is fake, will have the chance to win a $500 Amazon gift card. However, the grand prize of one million dollars will demand much more from the participant.
The jury in charge of evaluating the videos will be made up of a meteorologist and an astrobiologist called Jacob Haqq Misra. They will follow a strict list of criteria that alien videos must meet to be considered for the top prize.
Per official contest rules, the winner will be required to provide a Ring doorbell video from a device they own that has not been tampered with in any way. The video must last up to one minute and must provide “scientific evidence” of the existence of extraterrestrial life.
The definition of “scientific evidence” includes the condition that the video cannot be edited and that it must capture an extraterrestrial being “demonstrating unusual, extraordinary or inexplicable behavior” such as peculiar movements, unparalleled speed or distinctive morphology.

To keen observers, the alien detection initiative may seem like a marketing gimmick to drum up excitement around the companies involved. Ring, for example, will likely see an increase in security camera sales due to the contest, while Amazon will be happy to deliver them.
However, beyond the prize money, this challenge raises important questions, including the protection of the rights of privacy regarding filming. The competition raises several implications and offers a unique opportunity to discuss the topic.
