“LOOK AT THE PLAYERS, man!”: NFL refuses to remove narrow-cut turf fields after NFLPA protest

The NFL mainly consists of three types of flooring – slit-firm, double fiber and monofilament. However, among these three types, injury rates on hard grass with slits were occasionally observed to be very high. It is a matter of concern for players as they could be seriously injured, which will keep them off the field for a long time.

The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) has written a strongly-written letter to the league calling for the “immediate replacement and ban” of slit-film turf pitches.

Lately, Travis and John Kelce Representatives of the Kansas City Chiefs also supported the NFLPA’s views. Travis Kelce said that every time he plays on the court, his knees and joints hurt, which is dangerous for them. He urged the NFL to be mindful of the safety of their players.

NFLPA President JC Tretter’s protests are futile as the NFL doesn’t change its stance

head NFL Players Association JC Tretter vocally protested the quality of the spaces provided, which needed updating. He said that just because the quality of floors is inspected by NFL standards doesn’t mean they take absolute safety into account.

“Advocating safer working conditions is a core mission of our union, and there are few examples greater than raising the standards of the areas in which we work and play.”said NFLPA President JC Tretter. “Every week, after a player was injured, we often heard players raising their voices about the need to improve our pitches. This week, we’ve seen the NFL PR machine go into overdrive to spin a more positive narrative into what unity and players know is a problem.”

But despite these protests, Tretter reported:Not only did the NFL refuse to approve this change immediately, but it also refused to enforce a different change from slit film in the future.”

“If If the NFL is serious about their claims that they make data-driven decisions and care about player safety, we have some actionable elements for them.“

“Until we enforce these standards, the NFL needs to be a lot more conservative when we have visible issues with pitches. Current field inspections do not take performance and safety into account, so we should stop saying these arenas are safe to play on the basis of the fact that they have passed that inspection.” said Tretter.
