In light of Brian Flores’ lawsuits against the New York Giants and NFL for racial discrimination, many coaches and players stepped forward to share their own experiences of how they were treated differently by teams because of their skin color.
Recently, Baltimore Ravens quarterback, Lamar Jackson, quarterbacks still face racial discrimination, and NBA icon LeBron James is on the YouTube interview show “The Shop.”
“This is why I need that championship” – Lamar Jackson feels the need to win the Super Bowl to prove his worth as a Black QB
The two stars talked about how there is a historical bias against Black quarterbacks in the NFL. “It’s dying, but it’s still there” said Jackson. “He’s still there. That’s why I need the championship.” During the interview, LeBron James talked about how he is racially profiled in the NBA as well. He said he felt disrespected when he wasn’t included in discussions about the greatest goal scorers in NBA history.
This was something Jackson could relate to because of critics who said he was “not a real quarterback.” The 25-year-old star QB also shared that despite being a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, he was asked to run wide receiver drills in the NFL scout combination. In 2018, Jackson became the fourth Black quarterback to win NFL Most Valuable Player. 37-12 in the regular season and only 1-3 in the postseason.
When asked what lessons he hoped to learn from James as he grew older, Jackson replied, “Everything. And to be a champion. I feel like that’s all I want from him. You know, to be a champion. To be a billionaire. That’s what I’ve been thinking about since I was little, about being a billionaire and being a champion.”
