‘I had a chip in my shoulder before, it just got bigger’: Panthers rookie Matt Corral slips to 94 in the NFL Draft

The Carolina Panthers selected quarterback Matt Corral in the third round in this year’s NFL Draft, 94th overall. After this rather shaky draft night experience, Corral is happy to be on a team now and is willing to settle in and work to prove himself to the entire league.

Going into the draft, Matt Corral was one of the most anticipated quarterbacks due to his double threat abilities, making him many fake drafts in the first round of the draft. He also received an invitation to personally participate in the draft as one of the 21 players invited to Vegas. After draft night, Corral said he has more power than ever to prove everyone wrong and show he’s been overlooked by all the teams.

The newly drafted QB spoke NFL News and said “I mean, I had a chip on my shoulder before. But it got bigger, (draft night) it was definitely a roller coaster. It was a lot of mixed feelings. When I got that phone, I really wasn’t happy and sad at the same time. I’ve never felt that before.

Matt Corral was a star QB during his two-year stint with Ole Miss, where he led the school to a star record of 10-2 with a Sugar Bowl appearance in 2021. He recorded 3,349 yards, 20 TDs and 5 INTs. Corral’s draft dropped due to concerns about his maturity, but Panthers HC Matt Rhule objected, “There’s no substance to it.”

“Honestly, I don’t know where it came from, it’s just one of the things that comes out of here. Honestly, that’s the first time I’ve heard of it. This is not something I can control. I was taken. I’m here with an opportunity, and that’s all I can ask for.” said Matt Corral.

Matt Rhule justified the team’s decision to acquire Corral with these words: “When we watched the tape, we loved the way Matt played, his debut, his moxie. He got a little injured from crushing or trying to crush men. But at the end of the day, it’s still a game about who can throw the ball. And we love the way he throws the ball. Its release, its vision, its timing – we thought it would evolve to this level. ”

For now, the Panthers have Sam Darnold as a starter, who had a pretty tumultuous year last year and whose startup job was not secure. He’ll need to have a solid season to determine if he’s worthy to be the starting QB. The team has yet to decide who will start in Week 1, Rhule said he will pick the player who gives the team a chance to win.

Matt Corral is excited and happy to be on the team, even though he wants to be the guy to start Week 1. “I will be ready to play if I know the follow-up book, of course my mindset is to start when preparing for the start. But right now I’m trying to get into the 53-man squad.”
