Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Randall Cunningham resigned from his position as Las Vegas Raiders chaplain last month and did not offer a reason at the time. For most of you wondering what a chaplain does in an NFL franchise, let me make it absolutely clear.
Randall Cunningham, or any pastor for that matter, is employed to provide spiritual guidance and religious services to players and their immediate families. Therefore, when Cunningham abruptly quit the job, many asked as to what prompted the 59-year-old to make such a decision.
In an interview with Chris Tomasson St Paul’s Pioneer Press He revealed his reasons for leaving the Las Vegas Raiders after spending 2 years with the franchise. Randall Cunningham was not outspoken in his answers, claiming that he felt unwelcome when new head coach Josh McDaniels took over the coaching duties this summer from Joe Gruden, who had first recruited Cunningham.

“I tried contacting the right authorities to get confirmation on the direction of Coach McDaniels, but it just passed and I finally said, ‘I don’t think I’m needed here.’ Not anymore,'” Randall Cunningham told Tomasson.
“He texted me once and said, ‘I look forward to you and your participation here. I said, ‘You can call whenever you want. And I never got a callback. And I thought that was some kind of sign for me, now it’s time for me to move on.”
The former NFL quarterback went on to explain what the role of a chaplain was during his days with the Minnesota Vikings and felt that players needed someone to listen to them.
“Gamers really need someone to be like a brother, a father figure. Someone they could lean on and talk to outside the organization and that’s what we had in Minnesota.” Cunningham ended his interaction with Tomasson.
