As the battle royale game has seen huge growth in recent days, Krafton’s decision to make a free-to-play PUBG PC seems well worth it. The exponential growth was reported by the developers in a press release.
Released in 2017, Player’s Unknown Battlegrounds was available as a paid version on Steam. The game’s simple gameplay mechanics and unique aspects of the battle-royale impressed gamers so much that the game continued to create mobile versions that impressed their audiences equally. Where PUBG Mobile is free to play, the free version of PUBG PC was announced at Game Awards 2021.

PUBG PC player growth sees 486% increase

The announcement that PUBG PC would be free-to-play at Game Awards 2021 spread like wildfire, with many inactive players returning to the platform as soon as they were available for free download, following the advent of other F2P PC battle royale games like Valorant. On Steam on January 12, 2022.
In the press release, Krafton reported that a week after the transition to PUBG Battlegrounds, the game saw a 486% increase in new players, outstripping its 2017 player growth rate. Many new players have been spotted on the platform, which has helped boost growth at a higher rate (537%) in certain regions such as the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Southeast Asia, and South America.

PUBG PC has become one of the top-ranked games on Steam as more players start to venture into unknown battlegrounds. Krafton provided a smooth transition by adding various futuristic elements such as drones, tactical gears to stay on par with other contemporary battle-royale games.
To celebrate the final milestones and the final F2P pass, Krafton will host various events such as the “Check-In Dinner Event” to reward its most active players. Players who play the game for at least one hour between January 27 at 16:00 PST and January 30 at 3:59 PST will receive special rewards for each day they “check-in”. Overall, PUBG PC has managed to redefine the battle royale genre thanks to the developer’s efforts to launch frequent updates and add fun and realistic elements to the game. To date, the game has sold 75 million copies on PC and consoles, making it one of the best-selling games of all time. PUBG Esports is also developing in different countries, so players are waiting for the first tournaments after the F2P transition.
