The National Agency for Frequencies (ANFR), a genuine French police officer for radio equipment, has announced several changes to the display of the SAR of wave-emitting products. As a reminder, DAS stands for Specific Absorption Rate. It is a value that indicates the amount of radio waves absorbed by the body when using an electronic device.
It is a value that smartphone manufacturers and distributors (operator or brand) must demonstrate for 13 years. A decree was issued last November. This extends this liability to any device that emits more than the following. 20mW radio waves and “intended for use close to the body”. That’s why this specifically includes tablets, laptops with GSM connectivity, certain connected watches and wireless headsets. But it’s not just him.
As expected, this obligation took effect yesterday, Wednesday 1private July 2020. Manufacturers and distributors will therefore have to adapt to this new regulation. The aim is to inform the consumer if a device emits more waves than average. ANFR will also have a monitoring role regarding products that do not comply with the maximum allowable speeds.
A third SAR value appears
Also, a new feature that went into effect this week, now displays a third SAR value for all devices. So far, two values have been announced for a single device: “head” SAR and “body” SAR. These are absorption rates for specific parts of the body. From now on a value DAS “member” will determine the amount of waves absorbed by the arm or leg.
The maximum allowable member SAR is higher than the head and body SAR. 4 W/kg, against 2 W/kg. As with smartphones, ANFR will have the task of ensuring that these values are respected for any product sold in France, such as Xiaomi and Nokia, which were fixed at the end of last year.
