Play Store: ads officially appear in the search bar

Google is not on its first try when it comes to Play Store advertising. Of course, in the various tabs we find offers for applications included in the advertising spaces provided for this purpose. But a few months ago, the Mountain View company started experimenting with another ad format, this time right in the search bar.

Initially, Google claimed that these were not really ads, but rather recommendations from the platform based on user research. Thus, it will offer apps that have recently received a major update, are hosting a particular event, or are currently just promoting.

Google no longer hides a request to put ads in Play Store’s search bar

With a recent update that is still in distribution, though, Google puts an end to doubts. As our colleagues at Android Headlines noticed, these “recommendations” now display the word “ad” next to the corresponding app. In other words, there is no longer any possible doubt: it is indeed a new ad space available to developers.

The “ad” tag isn’t the only new piece of information this update brings. The Play Store supplements the attachment with the name of the app publisher, the overall rating given by users, and the number of downloads.

However, keep in mind that not all referrals are accompanied by the “ad” label. These are not potentially sponsored content, but a feature of the Play Store that aims to discover new apps that might be of interest to the user. The update will reach us within a few days or weeks at the most.
