In 2022, Gmail’s chat solution, Hangouts, has been definitively replaced by Google Chat on Android. While users gained ergonomics and practicality with this application for instant messaging, they also suffered losses in terms of design. In fact, the Google Chat interface is relatively plain; It displays messages in the inbox as well as a menu and a search bar provided.
So it was high time for Google to clean up this outdated design to improve it. But the Mountain View firm is now determined to modernize the design of its messaging apps. Google Messages got this a few days ago, now it’s Google Chat’s turn. Recently, the application also changed its logo on Android, indicating that other innovations were coming.
Google Chat finally adopts the Material you design
New features are mostly located at the bottom of the screen. In fact, the search bar has not changed with the new update, and there is a simple reason for this: it already adhered to Material You standards. As with every design change, Google once again took inspiration from this philosophy to implement its changes. So, to design a brand new menu bar, you need to look at the bottom of the fold.
Where once there were only partitions Cat And Fields There are now 4 sections: Home, Messages, Spaces and Mentions. As with the revamp of Messages, Google has added new features to its application, making it possible to provide direct access to the message in which your name is mentioned for faster responses, as well as to offer an overview of its conversations in the Home section.
A new conversation starter button now displays a less impressive, simple icon and is now located to the right of the menu bar, making things cleaner. The whole is much more rounded, which contrasts with the not-so-cosy straight lines used so far.
