The Samsung Galaxy S6 Active at AT&T, like many other “Active” or “Sports” versions of Samsung Galaxy phones in the past, has lagged behind when it comes to software updates. But for those who own the AT&T Galaxy S6 Active today, we have good news.
A few months after the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge were launched, Samsung introduced another Galaxy S6 variant. Of course, it was the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active for AT&T that came just in time for the summer months. A durable, water-resistant phone that can withstand the outdoors.
Unfortunately the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active did not receive the same fast updates as other Galaxy S6 phones, not to mention it was excluded from the official list of supported devices using Samsung Pay. Today, that all changes with a new software update that we’ll finally cover below.
The latest version of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop was released for the last Samsung Galaxy S6 on AT&T about three months ago, so those who have the Active are patiently waiting for it to arrive. In fact, the older Galaxy S5 got Android 5.1.1 Lollipop before the Galaxy S6 Active.
But it was worth the wait because we have good news today. AT&T has officially started rolling out the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for the Galaxy S6 Active this week. The update brings the latest software improvements, battery tweaks, security fixes and more. Perhaps the best part for many is that it also enables Samsung Pay so users can pay wirelessly with the Galaxy S6 Active. The phone can already do it all, and now one more feature can be added to the list.
AT&T quietly started rolling out the update for users this morning, and Samsung’s released A small changelog detailing what owners can expect.
This brings the Galaxy S6 Active from Android 5.0.2 to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Multiple security patches are included, including stage-fright, bug fixes, performance and battery life improvements, and more are probably included but left out of the changelog.
Samsung Galaxy S6 Active owners can expect the update to arrive today or in the next 5-7 days. Users can also go to settings > about phone > manually check and download the update.
For now we haven’t heard anything from Sprint regarding the Galaxy S5 Sport, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and there are no official announcements regarding Android 6.0 Marshmallow for any Galaxy smartphones.
At the same time, we learned some good news about Android 6.0 Marshmallow for a number of Samsung devices this week, and that could include the Galaxy S6 Active. However, probably after the regular models, it will hopefully be updated in March or April of 2016. Stay tuned for more details and get the update today to get the most out of Active with Samsung Pay and more.
