Chrome will soon support dark mode for websites

The Chromium team has announced that the Chrome browser will soon become compatible with dark modes found on web pages that provide one. This functionality will work on the same model as the one already made in Safari (12.1) and soon available in Firefox (67). Sites will be able to program several interface themes and will be automatically presented to the user corresponding to the default parameter selection.

Three options will be available: light mode (white background), dark mode (black background) or indifferent (it is the site that sets the priority, usually white). Another way to enable dark mode on web pages, more barbaric, is to reverse black and white. This is a choice taken by Samsung for its browser, for example, but which can break a site’s design.

Almost all platforms are involved: Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome OS, Android and Android WebView. However, the availability and offerings of this option will vary depending on the environment. The simplest will be on Android, especially with the arrival of the next major version of the mobile operating system (Android Q will have a native dark mode). The integration should work equally well on MacOS and Windows. We’ll have to push for others.

Site developers are warned, they can start planning a dark mode for their web pages. Hopefully bigger players will play together, going from white to black from page to page can be pretty unpleasant if there isn’t a dark mode available in certain areas.
