Android Auto: users report errors with Wi-Fi connection

In principle, when your smartphone is connected to your car with Android Auto system, this should show the Wi-Fi icon, including the cellular networks you are connected to. However, users have noticed that after several Android Auto updates recently: the operating system has probably changed the way wireless support works.

Indeed, the Wi-Fi icon seems to have disappeared from Android Auto even if your phone is still connected to a network. Some users connecting to Android Auto using mobile hotspots no longer see the Wi-Fi icon, however, this problem is not limited to a missing icon, as the connection to the smartphone seems much more unstable than before.

Android Auto no longer works properly over Wi-Fi

According to some drivers complaining about the new version of Android Auto on Reddit, the operating system will no longer run when a phone is connected to a hotspot. According to them, when a smartphone is connected to Android Auto, the device can no longer connect to the hotspot.

So this is a big problem as the use of Wi-Fi in cars is quite common. For example, to use Android Auto wirelessly, such as the latest Motorola Android Auto MA1, it is necessary to connect to a wireless hotspot when using external dongles.

Other users also report problems with the network used, becauseHotspots mostly run at 2.4 GHz, while Android Auto usually seems to use a 5 GHz network. Therefore, the connection between the smartphone and the car is not always established, as the two use different networks.

Anyway, all these issues seem to have appeared after the last Android Auto 7.8 update. Google has not yet officially acknowledged the issue. but we hope that the American giant will soon release a new update that will fix all the problems.
