The history surrounding the city of Atlantis is approximately 2,500 years old. It is commonly shared that, after a battle, the city ended up sinking, although this possibility has been disregarded by scientists.
However, recent studies are investigating the seabed in search of new archaeological finds. In the midst of this, could the city of Atlantis be found?
New technologies advance discoveries in the ocean
According to experts, if it were submerged, it would be possible to find the city of Atlantis through its magnetic field. Thus, research based on this hypothesis was developed by the School of Archaeological and Forensic Sciences at the University of Bradford, in the United Kingdom.
The main objective of the project is not to find Atlantis. However, it is believed that at the end of the Ice Age, there was a continent that connected Great Britain to Continental Europe.
In turn, this connection existed approximately 8 thousand years ago and it is not known whether its sinking was caused by a tsunami or even melting glaciers.
The submerged region was known as Doggerland. It is known that it was located in the North Sea, considered one of the largest prehistoric settlements in Europe. In addition, it is a civilization rich in natural resources and biodiversity.
Other studies have already found traces that prove its existence, such as the remains of a mammoth, red deer antlers, hunting weapons, stone tools and even the skull of a Neanderthal.
How do researchers search for archaeological sites?
Magnetometry technology will be used to find the desired signals from the hidden continent. It can detect changes in the magnetic field in order to investigate the geology of the location.
Therefore, the search for regions in the North Sea is happening at an accelerated pace due to the United Kingdom’s interest in developing wind energy.
The country’s investment in wind power aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. While this is a positive move, construction could destroy undiscovered archaeological sites.
Even though it is not in search of the city of Atlantis, ultimately, the study using geophysical techniques will be useful in the search for the continent and sites under the sea.
