With rising expenses, Brazilian citizens are increasingly concerned, as their money is not enough to cover all their expenses. Despite this, some people may be entitled to a discount on their electricity bill to help pay the bill. Read on to learn how to get the social energy tariff.

What is the social tariff?

The social tariff is precisely the program that offers discounts on the electricity bill. This reduction can reach up to 65%, that is, more than half of the value of the bill.

The initial discount amount is 10%, and is aimed at those who consume between 101 and 220 KWh. However, those who consume up to 30 KWh can receive a 65% discount.

Who is entitled to the benefit?

Citizens who may have this right guaranteed must have their registrations active and updated on CadÚnicowhich considers low income as the main prerequisite.

Per capita family income cannot exceed half the minimum wage (R$660.00 in 2023), or up to three wages in the case of people with disabilities.

Elderly people, aged 65 or over, who receive the Continuous Social Assistance Benefit (BPC) are also entitled, as are people with disabilities who receive the same benefit.

How does the discount on the electricity bill work?

This discount occurs due to the exemption of some fees, such as the Energy Development Account (CDE) and the Incentive Program for Alternative Sources of Electric Energy (Proinfa).

Once this is done, there are still discounts in relation to consumption:

• From 0 to 30 kWh used – 65% discount;
• From 31 to 100 kWh used – 40% discount;
• From 101 to 220 kWh used – 10% discount;
• Above 220 kWh – no discount.

How to get the benefit?

Since the beginning of 2022, the social tariff has been granted automatically. To access the benefit, CadÚnico data must be up to date. Therefore, there are cases in which the person is entitled, but the discount does not occur due to outdated data or incorrect address.
