Stephen Hawking was one of the greatest physicists in history. His work made a great contribution to the scientific community, especially with his theories on black holes and the like.

His well-known book “A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes”, published in 1988, was revolutionary with the physicist’s cosmological views.
Until the end of his life, he continued to carry out different works, proposing various hypotheses in research and finding significant answers.
His studies and reflections are the subject of the new book “On the Origin of Time: Stephen Hawking’s Final Theory”, published by Thomas Hertog, who was his colleague at the University of Cambridge.
In the publication, the physicist addresses Hawking’s latest insights into the origin of time, examining them in detail.
Changing Cosmos


In the 1980s, the multiverse theory – which suggested the possibility of an infinite number of universes – gained the attention of cosmologists.
Hawking seemed unfocused at the time, but he reached the end of his life bringing ideas related to the fact that the cosmos is the sustenance of different forms of life.
This is precisely the central discussion of Thomas Hertog’s book, which talks about Hawking’s reflection on a cosmos where everything changes, including the laws of physics.
In the narrative, Hertog says that in this reality
“The rules of physics are transmuted in the early universe, in a process of random variation and selection similar to Darwinian evolution, in which particle species, forces and even time disappear in the big bang.”

Even with the possibility that the early universe may have undergone changes, the book “On the Origin of Time” maintains already consolidated theories. Some of them are:
- Gravity is fundamental, but with an extreme weakness. Hertog writes that if it were the other way around:
“[…] stars would shine brighter and therefore die much younger, leaving no time for complex life to evolve on any of the orbiting planets warmed by their heat.”
- The cosmos has 3 large spatial dimensions. If there were one more dimension, the atoms and orbits would become unstable. Thus,
“The Earth would spiral towards the Sun instead of tracing a stable orbit around it.“
Even though he backed down after proposing a limitless universe, Hawking never fully established the theory of a multiverse.
Still, he accepted studies that say the universe underwent a large and rapid expansion shortly after the Big Bang, called inflation.
Despite these claims, the question remains as to what could have been the reason for this explosion to occur and result in the galaxies that the scientific community knows today.
