Despite recent events that have brought to light the issue of abandoning electric cars in China, this situation is not new in the country.
Reports about this problem have emerged since 2021 and gained prominence in Asia. With the growth of the electric vehicle market, the problem of abandoned car cemeteries becomes even more acute.
The situation occurs in the city of Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, where several prominent local and international models, such as the Byd e3, Geely Kandi K10 and Neta V, are abandoned. Surprisingly, some of the abandoned vehicles still have registration plates.
This reality directly contrasts with the current global scenario, in which automakers like Byd are increasingly involved in the electrification of vehicles, driven by the growing adoption of electricity as an energy source. It’s even more shocking to realize that the abandoned cars aren’t old; on the contrary.
The images and videos that have gone viral in recent days, released by YouTuber and digital influencer Serpentza, show a sea of abandoned electric cars, comprising approximately 10 thousand models. This has generated a new debate about the relationship between production and demand in China.
Given this, questions arise about the strategic intention behind this reality. In other words, there are those who suggest that this situation could be an attempt to inflate sales of these models in the country without the automakers suffering losses as a result. The unknown remains.
