As soon as the animal was revealed, the entire scientific community was extremely interested in knowing more about it. But even people who are not experts in the area are curious, after all, it is estimated that the heaviest animal in the world weighs an astonishing 375 tons and is approximately 20 meters long.

Be amazed by the heaviest animal in the world
The name of the heaviest animal in the world to date is Perucetus Colossus, one whale colossal of Peru. Scientists came to this conclusion based on fossils of the species that were unearthed in the Ica desert, in southern Peru. This whale is believed to have lived 40 million years ago.
Researchers believe the whale is the heaviest animal in the world, however, it may not be the longest. The animal’s bones were discovered more than a decade ago by Mario Urbina, from the Natural History Museum at the University of San Marcos, in Lima.
Once the fossils were found, an international team dedicated years of research and excavation to recover all the bones from the steep, rocky slope of the Peruvian desert.
Since the discovery, the group of paleontologists responsible for the research has already managed to identify around 13 vertebrae from the whale’s backbone, as well as a hip bone and four ribs. To give you an idea, each vertebra weighs more than 100 kg and the ribs are almost 1.5 meters long. Shocking, isn’t it?!
How is weight calculated?
As mentioned, researchers only found the bones of the animal that lived thousands of years ago. So how did they calculate the whale’s correct weight? The answer is simple: using technology.
The team responsible for the research used 3D scanners to analyze the structure of the bones, as well as drilling holes to examine the interior of each fossil.
The parts of the bones found so far were essential in determining the whale’s weight. Furthermore, based on the density of the bones, it was possible to see that this species lived most of the time in shallow coastal waters. This leads researchers to believe that it had a similarity to coastal animals, such as the manatee.
