Scientists study the possibility of communicating with animals using AI

Progress in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled the development of large-scale language models (LLMs), capable of communicating in an increasingly sophisticated and natural way, approaching human language.

Now, a new and provocative challenge in the field of interspecies communication has emerged: scientists from Tel Aviv University, in Israel, have launched an audacious initiative called “Dr. Dolittle Challenge”, with the purpose of investigating whether AI can be used in communication with animals.

Neurobiologists Yossi Yovel and Oded Rechavi are the pioneers behind this audacious proposal, which was detailed in an article published in the journal Current Biology. The essence is to develop a way to enable artificial intelligence-based language models to overcome three fundamental challenges to communication.

The first obstacle faced is the need to use the animal’s own communicative signals. This means that, to communicate with dogs, for example, the AI ​​would have to be able to “bark” in dog language.

This is a complex task, as different species use a wide variety of sounds, gestures and body expressions. The intelligent system would need to learn to imitate these signals in an accurate and meaningful way.

The second challenge relates to applying these signals in a variety of behavioral contexts. It’s not just about translating a dog’s bark into human language, but also about understanding when and why this bark occurs.

For example, the scientists can play a bird alarm call in response to an imminent threat, to test the AI’s ability to understand and respond kindly.

Although LLMs have shown incredible potential for understanding and generating language, communication between humans and animals involves additional complexities. Even though the system may be able to identify basic emotions in rescue animals, true interaction still appears to be out of reach.

In the future, neurobiologists see significant potential for AI in exploring animal communication. The ability to understand behavioral cues and contexts could lead to a deeper understanding of emotions across different species and open up new opportunities for study.
