Coca-Cola, Danone and Nestlé are accused of lying about packaging recycling

Coca-Cola, Danone and Nestlé are facing a potential storm of criticism and investigations from the European Commission after being accused of greenwashing, which is the practice of promoting ecological actions without actually following through on them.

Claims made by consumer organizations and environmental groups call into question the companies’ claims that their plastic water bottles are “100% recycled” or “100% recyclable.”

The European Consumer Organization, supported by environmental groups Client Earth and ECOS, argues that these companies’ bottles are never entirely made from recycled materials.

In turn, Nestlé declared that it is reducing the use of plastic in its packaging.

Meanwhile, Danone reinforced its belief in the circularity of packaging and its commitment to leading efforts to improve collection and recycling infrastructure.
