Initially launched at CES 2020, ‘Ballie’, the spherical home robot from Samsung, returns to the technology scene at CES 2024, this time with a series of updates and artificial intelligence (AI) features.
If the memory of ‘Ballie’ had faded, the South Korean tech giant is determined to get it back on consumers’ radar.
AI innovations and versatile features
The latest and improved ‘Ballie’ features dimensions similar to a bowling ball, powered by a battery designed to provide between two and three hours of continuous operation.
Equipped with a spatial lidar sensor, the robot now has better navigation capabilities, which makes it able to navigate rooms and overcome obstacles with more dexterity.
The big news is the inclusion of a 1080p projector with two lenses, allowing ‘Ballie’ to project movies, video calls and even serve as a second monitor for PRAÇA.
Samsung highlights the robot’s versatility, mentioning the ability to automatically adjust the projected image based on distance from the wall and lighting conditions.
Additionally, ‘Ballie’ responds to voice commands and, interestingly, to requests sent via text message. Samsung highlights interaction through chatbot to confirm requests before executing them. This control method adds a unique layer to the user experience.
Among its abilities, ‘Ballie’ can turn on smart lights and even “non-smart” devices via a built-in infrared transmitter. O robot is capable of mapping the layout of a home to identify the location of smart devices.
Samsung promises advanced features like automatic reminders to care for plants, access to remote medical services, and personalization based on the people around you thanks to integrated front and rear cameras.
Although Samsung has released several promises regarding ‘Ballie 2.0’, details about availability and pricing have not yet been confirmed.
Uncertainty persists as to whether the innovations presented will be enough to captivate consumers, considering the challenges faced by other domestic robots on the market.
It remains to be seen whether Samsung will be able to overcome these obstacles and transform ‘Ballie’ into a consistent presence in homes across the world. future.
