From diamond to disillusionment: teenagers find treasure, but in return they get disappointment

In 2017, headlines around the world reported the discovery of the ‘peace diamond’ in Sierra Leonea treasure that promised to transform the lives of the local population.

Behind this promise were young diggers Komba Johnbull and Andrew Saffea, whose journey, away from the spotlight, would be marked by great disappointments.

Dreams and realities

Johnbull and Saffea’s hard work began with the hope of finding something that would change their lives.

Coming from different realities, both shared the dream of escaping from poverty and achieve a more promising future. The discovery of a 709-carat diamond seemed like the golden ticket to fulfilling those desires.

O Diamondsold for US$6.5 million, opened up possibilities, but the stipulated agreement left the excavators with just US$80,000 each.

The promise of transformation turned out to be a disappointment when compared to the total value of the precious stone.

Saffea, a student forced to drop out of school due to poverty, saw the discovery as a chance to continue his studies abroad.

Johnbull, in turn, dreamed of a two-story house and a vehicle. However, the execution of these plans encountered unexpected obstacles.

Attempts to study abroad failed, resulting in financial losses and challenging experiences.

Saffea’s reality, taking care of horses in a stable after dreaming of studying at night, differs greatly from her initial expectations.

Lack of recognition

In addition to the financial difficulties, what weighs most heavily on Johnbull and Saffea is the lack of recognition for the discovery.

While the media focused on the pastor who sponsored them, the actual diggers were barely mentioned. The feeling of exclusion and the perception that history has been distorted hurts deeply.

Today, Johnbull makes aluminum frames in Freetown, while Saffea, facing challenges in an unfamiliar country, longs to return home.

The money wasted in the past serves as a lesson, and both reflect on how they could have used their opportunities more wisely.

Although the diamond provided unexpected momentary wealth, the story of Johnbull and Saffea serves as a reminder that behind the glittering promises, the real life it often holds unforeseen challenges and valuable lessons.
