Recently, during an exploration mission in the region known as the ‘Last Judgment Glacier’, in Antarcticaan unmanned submarine equipped with cutting-edge technology has disappeared, generating concern in the scientific community.
The autonomous underwater vehicle, called Ran and estimated at R$18.8 million, measuring around seven meters in length, is one of only three models of its type spread across the world.

In 2019, the team of scientists behind the project achieved a milestone by successfully sending Ran to the depths of the ‘Doomsday Glacier’, capturing underwater data and images and becoming the first to achieve such a feat.
However, during its second expedition, the high-speed submarine technology did not emerge to the surface after the exploration period as expected.
Programmed to operate autonomously for up to 36 hours, Ran should have returned within that time frame.
Faced with such a situation, oceanographer and member of the research team, Anna Wahlin, compared the search for the submarine to “looking for a needle in a haystack, without even knowing where the haystack is”.
According to her, the Ran’s batteries were exhausted, and the circumstances that led to the vehicle’s disappearance are unknown, raising the possibility of technical problems or obstructions under the ice.
Ran is vital for scientists to study glacier conditions and monitor sea level rise.
The ‘Doomsday Glacier’, larger than the state of Florida in the United States, poses a significant threat.
This is because, if it completely melted, it could raise global sea levels by more than 60 centimeters, according to The Sun. The nickname ‘Doomsday’ reflects the catastrophic damage that its collapse could cause.
Despite coordinated efforts by large ships, helicopters and drones, to date, the submarine remains missing, with no sign of its location.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by scientists in exploring the most remote and inaccessible regions of the planet and highlights the continued importance of research to understand the effects of climate changes in our world.
