New ocean is being formed, scientists say

Scientists explain that the formation of a new ocean is the result of the constant movement of tectonic plates.

However, this occurs very slowly and can only be observed through specific studies.

Displacement is responsible for geographic changes on the planet’s surface and has a direct impact on the generation of mountains, volcanoes and, now, the creation of a new ocean.

The movement of the African and Arabian tectonic plates, which have separated them for approximately 30 million years, is the same as that which divided the Red Sea.

The new crack is located at the edges of three of these plates, which gradually move apart, creating the new body of water.

One of the consequences of the formation of a new ocean it is the modification of the coastline of countries that previously did not have access to the sea, such as Uganda and Zambia.

Christopher Moore, a doctoral student at the University of Leeds, highlights the uniqueness of the African case and its importance for geological studies in a statement to NBC News:

“This is the only place on Earth where you can study how a continental rift becomes an oceanic rift,” says the scientist.
