O Google launched, last Monday (4), a competition that will reward groups that develop algorithms for quantum computing.
The objective of the action, carried out in partnership with XPRIZE, is to find computational solutions to real-world problems.
The competition prize is millionaires. It can reach US$5 million, that is, something around R$25 million in direct quotation.
The dispute lasts three years. This long term arises from the need to test and prove that the technologies will, in fact, be useful for people.
The competition is a partnership between Google Quantum AI and Google.org with XPRIZE, which is a non-profit organization that organizes tournaments with the aim of promoting technological development.
Gesda (Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator) is also part of the action.

Google’s interest in encouraging the development of quantum computing comes from the fact that it can help solve a series of issues and is seen with a promising eye in the technology area.
To this day, quantum algorithms are widely used to solve abstract mathematical questions.
It is still not known for sure about their ability to help with society’s problems, but research has already shown signs that this could happen.
Some preliminary studies have shown that quantum computing can surprise and speed up procedures, such as creating medicinesdiscovery of new materials that can function as batteries and even the creation of more efficient nuclear fusion reactors.
What Google and the partners involved in the action intend is precisely to evaluate this capacity and encourage the exploration of quantum potential.
Google Prize Rules
The main objective of the dispute is to create codes aligned with the SDGs, that is, Sustainable Development Goals, defined by United Nations (UN).
The idea is that they can help the world’s population with current problems.
Each registered group will have to make a presentation, in which they will demonstrate the problem, how they intend to solve it and, also, how long the code would take to reach the desired result.
A group of judges, made up of members from various areas of activity, will be responsible for analyzing the proposals and also for monitoring their development over the three years of competition.
In the semifinal phase, the chosen groups must detail which technologies would be necessary to develop the project, explain why the solution is more efficient on a quantum computer than on a conventional one, and project the impact of the solution on society.
According to Google’s official statement, a grant of US$3 million will be distributed among the grand prize winners (maximum of three people) and another of US$1 million will be divided among the finalists.
