Top 2 Ways to Export Questions from Google Sheets to Google Forms

Usually, when you create a Google Form, you have to perform several steps. For example, add a question, choose the question type, type the questions and then the answers. If you have few questions, the process becomes tedious. To avoid this, you can type your questions and answers into Google Sheets and then import them into Google Forms with a few clicks. Are you wondering how? We will share two easy methods to export questions from Google Sheets to Google Forms.

Google Forms provides a native way to import questions from existing forms. You can also import questions from Google Docs. However, importing questions from Google Sheets is not yet natively supported.

Therefore, we need to use alternative methods to export questions from Google Sheets to Google Forms.

Method 1: Using the Plugin

One of the easiest and free ways to export questions to a Google Form is to use the Form Builder plugin. It allows you to import all or some of the questions in your spreadsheet and edit the questions before importing them into your form. You can export questions from a spreadsheet to an existing form or create a new form.

note: The add-on is only available on the desktop.

Here are the steps to use this plugin to export questions from Google Sheets to Google Form.

1. Create a Google Spreadsheet

Open the Google Sheet with your questions and answers that you want to export to a form. You need to make the spreadsheet with one question in each column followed by its type and answers (more details below). Add the column names in the first row to make the job easier. For example, questions, answer 1, answer 2, etc.

Here is a basic type of spreadsheet data to help you frame your questions.

If you choose the first type, data in all columns and rows will be imported as questions. The default question type will be used as a short answer. A preview of the questions will be shown along with their types. Click Type to change the question type. Then click the gear or the settings icon to add values for your answer.

We recommend adding a Question type as one of the columns inside your Google Sheets. Values for this must be the same as found in Google Form. For example, Text, Title, Section, Multiple Choice, Checkbox etc. You can also add a column for the required field. If the question requires an answer, type True in that column, otherwise write False. Similarly, you can have an explanation. Here’s how the spreadsheet will look with the values in the plugin.

Note: The downside of this plugin is that the free version only lets you import 50 questions. You will need to purchase their premium package to remove this limit.

Method 2: Copy Paste Values

Adding questions to Google Forms is still tolerable. The problem arises when you need to add multiple values in multiple choice, checkbox or grid type answers. There is a simple solution to fix this problem. You need to enter the values in different rows in Google Sheets. Then copy the values and paste them in the first option of your answer. Google Forms automatically assigns each response to a different option. Here are the detailed steps.

Stage 1: In Google Sheets, enter your answers in separate rows as shown below. Select the rows containing your answers. Do not select any blank lines. Then copy the values using the Ctrl + C shortcut.

Import Questions from Word or Excel

You can use the above methods to create forms from other document types. For example, if you have a Word or Excel document, regularly copy the data to Google Sheets and then use the add-in. For multiple choice, you can copy directly from Word or Excel as shown above.
