Google Chrome has a lead over competing browsers for Mac and Windows. However, Google Chrome can sometimes behave strangely on Mac. For example, we’ve seen Google Chrome open automatically on startup. While that’s fine, not everyone turns on the Mac to browse. Fortunately, you can stop Google Chrome from opening on Mac on startup.
We can understand the cloud storage applications or password manager that opens at startup on Mac. Keeping the files and folder synchronized on macOS is very important. However, not everyone wants Google Chrome or music streaming services like Spotify to start automatically on Mac on startup.
Here is how to stop Google Chrome from opening at startup on Mac. The solutions outlined below will also apply to other third-party apps that launch when you log into the system.
1. Use the Dock
Apps like OneDrive or 1Password launch at startup to stay in the Mac menu bar. However, this is not the case with the Google Chrome browser.
You’ll find apps like Google Chrome and Spotify already open in the Mac dock. To stop the behavior, hover the mouse pointer over the Chrome app in the Dock and right-click.
If you’re using a trackpad, click the app icon with two fingers. Next, select Options and disable Open at Login.
From now on, you will not see Google Chrome open automatically at startup on Mac.
2. Use System Preferences Menu
Apple provides a convenient way to control all applications that open automatically on startup on Mac. Using this method, you can see that Google Chrome and other applications and services are launched at startup.
Follow the steps below.
Stage 1: Click on the little Apple icon in the upper left corner.
Step 2: Open the System Preferences menu.
Alternatively, you can use command + space and search for System Preferences.
Stage 3: Go to Users & Groups.
Step 4: Select your account and click Login Items on the right.
Step 5: To make any changes, you need to click on the little lock icon in the lower left corner and authenticate yourself with the Mac password.
Step 6: On Mac, select the app you want to remove at startup.
Step 7: Click the ‘-‘ icon at the bottom and uninstall the app.
Similarly, you can browse for other apps and services and uninstall them without launching at startup on Mac.
In our case, we found Figma (a UI/UX design) app that automatically opens on startup on Mac. We disabled the service using the same number.
3. Use a Third-Party App
The methods mentioned above should fix the problem for you. If you still see Google Chrome launching automatically on startup, you should seek help from a third-party app.
Native methods are limited to only showing apps and certain services. You cannot disable Adobe services and other Google systems running in the background during startup.
For a close inspection we will use the CleanMyMacX app on Mac. Check the steps below.
Stage 1: Download CleanMyMac X from the link below.
Step 2: Perform the normal installation and open the application.
Stage 3: You will find the Optimization option under the Speed menu on the CleanMyMac X home screen.
Step 4: Select View all items on the right.
Step 5: The first option is Login Items. On Mac, you’ll find apps that launch at startup. Disable irrelevant apps from the same menu.
Step 6: Switch to Second Start agents.
These are small satellite applications of other software products you have. They extend the functionality of the main product. However, in some cases you may want to consider removing or disabling them.
If you find any Google Chrome related service from the list, you need to disable it.

Disable Google Chrome Launching on Startup on Mac
Too many applications launched at startup slows down your Mac’s boot time. Also, with a few people running in the background, you have relatively few resources to run another app.
So, you should stop Google Chrome from opening on Mac at startup using the methods mentioned above. Besides that, Chrome was famous among Mac users for consuming a lot of memory resources, but not anymore. Still, there is no good reason to allow Google Chrome to launch on Mac on startup.
