Xiaomi Mi A2 Camera Review: Absolutely Best-in-Class

Xiaomi’s second-generation Android One device, the Mi A2, was recently launched in the country, and while it may seem like a mid-range offering on paper, the device has some major shortcomings. But the camera is not one of them. Compared to other mid-range smartphones in the market, Mi A2 (Rs. 16,999) includes some good camera enhancements including a 12MP+20MP dual camera setup on the back and a 20MP selfie shooter. The upgraded specs look pretty promising, but how does the camera actually perform in real-world use? Let’s jump right into the Mi A2 camera review and find out:

Before we dive further into the camera review, let’s take a detailed look at the camera specifications of the Mi A2. The dual camera setup of the Mi A2 is a 12MP f/1.8 sensor with 20MP f/1.8 secondary sensor for depth perception and better low-light performance. Primary cameras are also PDAF for faster focusing and electronic image stabilization (EIS). The dual camera setup is complemented by an LED that will primarily be used as a flashlight and can be used as a camera flash if you’re really desperate. Up front, Mi A2 packs 20MP f/2.2 selfie shooterIt’s a big step up from the 5MP selfie shooter on the Mi A1.

• Performance in Good Lighting Conditions

In good lighting conditions, the Mi A2’s camera performs extremely well for a device in this price range. sharp and detailed images with accurate color reproduction and no signs of oversaturation. also in pictures great dynamic range, the device manages to capture enough detail to separate a wide range of colors in a single frame. • Performance in Low Light Conditions

Low-light performance is also quite satisfactory for a smartphone in this price range, thanks to the 20MP secondary sensor. The device can capture a lot of light, which Great detail with very little noise. • Portrait Mode Performance

Considering that the Mi A2 has a dual camera setup, it’s pretty obvious that the device has portrait mode capabilities. Unlike other devices in this price range, portrait mode images clicked using the Mi A2 come out really nice. there are pictures good subject separation, accurate edge detection and a natural background blur. In our testing, the device ran into no issues clicking portrait mode shots of a wide variety of subjects, including inanimate objects. Here are a few examples of portrait mode shot using the Mi A2:

• Video Recording Performance

The primary cameras on the Mi A2 are capable of capturing 4K@30fps video, another feature not commonly found on devices in this price range. Device manages to shoot quality video, but due to the lack of any stabilization, the resulting video is quite shaky. Electronic image stabilization on the Mi A2 only works with 1080p@30fps video and the resulting video. looks great and is pretty stable. Example videos we clicked using Mi A2:

Front camera

As mentioned earlier, the Mi A2 has a 20MP f/2.2 front camera for capturing selfies, which once again works pretty well. In good lighting conditions, the selfie shooter on the Mi A2 captures great images with: plenty of detail and good color accuracy. However, the front camera does not have the same dynamic range as the primary camera and therefore tends to mess up when the camera is looking at a light source. As you would expect, the front camera on the Mi A2 also has portrait mode capabilities and the software implementation is quite satisfactory. Mi A2 vs. Competitors: Camera Comparison

While it doesn’t do well in other scenarios when compared to its rivals, the Redmi Note 5 Pro, ZenFone Max Pro M1 6GB and Nokia 6.1 Plus, it’s definitely better than the others in the camera department. In both good lighting conditions and low light, Images captured by Mi A2 have more detail and better color reproduction. I was quite impressed with the camera’s performance. As you can tell from the sample pictures, the Mi A2 not only outperforms other devices in good lighting, but also performs better in low lighting conditions. Portrait mode images clicked using the Mi A2 also offer: better edge detection, a more natural-looking bokeh effect, and plenty of detail. Check out the example below:
