Redmi Note 5 Pro Portrait Mode Test: True to Its Claims?

Xiaomi has recently launched its latest budget offering, the Redmi Note 5 Pro. Launched as the camera beast of the country, Xiaomi directly compared the device’s portrait selfies to the iPhone X and Google Pixel 2. They even stated that their mid-range devices perform better for portrait selfies than flagship devices. Well, we at Beebom wanted to test that claim here, and below is our portrait mode analysis of the Redmi Note 5 Pro:

Rear Camera Portrait Mode Test

In our analysis of portrait mode on the Redmi Note 5 Pro, The 12+5MP Dual Camera setup with dual-tone flash performed surprisingly well, especially considering its price.

Edge detection works really well and background blur is just right. However, the camera fails to blur the background properly when various levels of objects come into play. For example, when capturing a portrait image of a person, we can easily see that the camera blurs only half of his shirt and the blur around the hair is not at its best. It’s still not perfect as you get a hint that it’s a software gimmick, but it’s definitely one of the best portrait mods I’ve tried.

That said, the Redmi Note 5 Pro has arguably the best portrait mode camera in the sub-20K segment and can easily be recommended for any budget smartphone camera fanatic.

Front Camera Portrait Mode Test

Coming to the front camera, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is a monstrous 20 MP f/2.2 camera with LED flash. Also, as we mentioned in our Redmi Note 5 Pro features article, portrait mode for the front camera is available in other menus. But that’s the UI part. I’m sure you’re more interested in the performance aspect of the Redmi Note 5 Pro’s front camera, right? Well, I’ve included some photos taken in portrait mode of the front camera below:

As you can see, the results achieved are quite good. Images look sharp and have good color reproduction. On the other hand, there is the depth effect and the edge detection is definitely good, but not as good as the rear camera. However, this was to be expected, considering that the front camera only relied on artificial intelligence to produce a depth effect in images.

Finally, we compared the Redmi Note 5 Pro with the iPhone X and Pixel 2 and the results were just as we expected. Yes, the mid-range device works really well or is actually fine, especially considering its price point, but then again, You can’t compare it to the likes of the iPhone X and Pixel 2. There’s a lot more clarity on the flagship devices, and the Redmi Note 5 looks mediocre at best when compared to the two.

Redmi Note 5 Pro: Best Budget Portrait Camera on the Market?

So, does the Redmi Note 5 Pro have the best portrait camera on the market? Yes, if your budget is below -20k INR. The images produced are sharp, color reproduction is great, there is enough blur for a depth effect, and edge detection is practically the best in the segment. However, comparing the device to flagship devices like the iPhone X and Pixel 2 is really silly because these devices have both hardware and advanced AI to produce much better portrait results.
