Ricky Williams, former RB of the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints, had an incredible NFL career with more than 1,000 sprints over five seasons. However, multiple suspensions were overshadowed by Williams’ testing positive for marijuana use.
These suspensions tarnished his image, and now after his retirement, the actor has become an advocate for promoting the use of marijuana as a form of medication to treat pain and social anxiety. RB, 44, in an interview Fox News Digital He talked about the life-changing benefits of cannabis.
“Money is scattering all over the place,” Le Batard told Tom Brady after his massive $375 million deal with Fox Sports.
“It made me think differently”: Ricky Williams

Williams talked about the benefits he saw after consuming marijuana, “I think I realized after failing a drug test in 2002 and the NFL said, ‘Okay, now you’re going to take 10 drug tests a month,’ Frankly, I quit smoking. I thought it didn’t matter at the time, but when I quit smoking I realized I took more pain relievers and I realized that I was more worried.”
Williams added, “So I started to keep smoking a little bit to see if there was a difference. And in this case, I noticed a big difference – I recovered faster, things didn’t bother me much and it reflected in my performance.”
Williams felt that the biggest advantage of cannabis was its healing benefits, team doctors give you pills when you’re injured in the NFL or after games in general. These may help you in the short run but may harm the player’s health in the long run.
“I was taking more pain relievers because I was more aware of the pain I was going through. In 2002, nobody really talked about medical marijuana, especially outside of California. Most of the talk about marijuana, especially in the NFL, was, ‘Don’t do it because it’s a drug and you’re going to get in trouble. “I started using cannabis because other football players on my team were using cannabis and they suggested I use it too. So it was more like peer pressure and harmony.”
Rumors about marijuana are that it makes you lazy and doesn’t do any work, but Williams disputes this, “That’s not what people say, because when I consumed marijuana I wasn’t sitting on the couch, I wasn’t lazy. I was reading, reflecting and doing like my own psychology and working on myself. When I retired from the NFL in 2004 and got rid of those confines, I started traveling and chatting and reading and understanding, ‘Oh, they lied to us about that. “
“Then, I continued researching further and further. And it turned out to be something that has been considered a medicine for thousands of years, helping people in their religious practice and self-understanding. And only since 1937 it was considered a negative thing” Williams said he was hinting at propaganda being run by pharmaceutical companies.

While Williams says it helps his body, he believes it’s strange for him to be disciplined for something like this. He was suspended multiple times and former Washington QB Joe Theismann called him addicted when he joined the Canadian Football League.
“If someone has social anxiety or any mental health issue, standard treatment is twofold. This is usually some form of talk therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy, and often people go the medication route. The idea is there is something internal that is causing problems for the person” Williams noted that the use of marijuana helped him reverse his thinking and helped him cope with his own anxiety issues.
The league is currently not that strict in terms of cannabis use, with the NFL liberalizing its stance and other leagues like the NBA not suspending players for using it.
