This week was marked by the distribution of beta 7 of iOS 16.0 and the first beta of iPadOS 16.1. If an iOS 16.1 beta isn’t available yet to get an idea of what the update will bring, looking at what’s new on the iPadOS 16.1 side is a good way to know ahead of time what Apple has planned. And 9TB5Mac just found an interesting piece of information in the iPadOS 16.1 code.
According to the publication, this new version of the operating system allows users to uninstall the Apple Wallet app, the digital wallet installed on iPhones by default. Since this app is not available on the iPad, and iPadOS has a common foundation with iOS, we do not take great risks in concluding that Apple plans to integrate the possibility of removing Wallet from its device into iPhones.
Victim of Apple Wallet collateral accusations against Apple Pay?
Apple Wallet is a service that allows you to manage tickets, transportation cards, loyalty cards, as well as debit cards added through Apple Pay. Very practical for some, useless for many users who do not use it. And because it cannot be deleted, the app consumes resources and storage space. While this is about to change with the release of iOS 16.1, iOS 16.0 is expected to hit a stable release in September.
However, the reason for this change is not necessarily related to improving the user experience. Apple is facing legal attacks regarding abuse of dominance in Apple Pay, the only app available for contactless payments with an iPhone today. Several antitrust lawsuits have hung in the face of the American firm, so Apple may authorize the removal of Wallet from the iPhone as a gesture of goodwill.
