Eight great sites that offer online classes

If you’ve already streamed your favorite series for the third time and hit a wall with your latest game, what should you do while sitting at home? Maybe you can learn a new skill or hobby by taking lessons.

From coding to history and languages, there are tons of online courses and lots of different resources to choose from. Below we have listed some notable sites where you can find online classes, attend some of them in real time, and enter at your leisure.

While many of these websites charge for memberships or certain classes, we have also mentioned which ones offer free courses.

Code Academy

Code Academy offers courses in computer science, data science, and web development. You can sign up for the free plan with access to 25 courses, or choose the Pro tier for $19.99 a month, which comes with 65 courses plus exercises, quizzes, and projects. Signing up for a Pro subscription also gives you access to Code Academy’s series of “paths” classes that can help you prepare for a particular career or learn a particular skill.

Coursera is one of the best-known platforms for online classes, and its catalog is so extensive that you can even complete a degree on the site. Google hosts courses from institutions and organizations including Stanford and more recently. MoMA on a wide range of topics. You can join Coursera for free and audit many lessons for free, but if you want a course certificate you will have to pay if you want to submit assignments or get grades. Some of the courses one-time feeor pay a monthly subscription fee to access relevant courses called “Specializations”. You can also make a payment Annual subscription fee for Coursera PlusThis gives you access to most of Coursera’s classes and earns certification. (Here is a complete list.)

edX

edX was founded by Harvard and MIT and partners with other universities such as Berkeley, Brown and Cornell to provide online courses. The site has a wide variety of classes, including topics ranging from data science to arts and humanities. Most courses are available for freehowever, you usually have to pay between $50 and $300 for feedback to be able to submit assignments and receive certification.

Harvard University

If you really want to take a Harvard course, the university lists its online courses on its website. (These lists link to edX where you can take the course.) Harvard offers courses in a variety of subjects; classes last from two weeks to 12 weeks. The site allows you to easily filter results to find. free courses. Paid courses cost from $30 to $3,000, and if you want a certificate to prove you’ve completed a free course, this is at an additional cost. (The ones we looked at ranged from $49 to $169.)

Kadenze offers courses in art and technology, from graphic design to preparing for a media career to learning an instrument. Some of these courses are created by Kadenze, while others come from institutions such as the Maryland Institute College of Art, Berklee College of Music, Stanford, and Columbia. You can sign up for a free subscription that lets you enroll in courses, but you can’t submit assignments or get college credit. You can sign up to access additional course content, submit assignments, and take grades. Premium plan, which costs $20 per month. To earn credits for the course, you must pay $300 per credit in addition to this monthly subscription fee.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a non-profit organization designed as a resource to support students from kindergarten to high school and offers all of its courses for free. It includes courses in math, science and engineering, and the arts and humanities. It offers some courses that may be useful to people who are no longer students, such as career counselling, entrepreneurship, personal finance, and MCAT and LSAT test preparation.

Skill sharing

Like Kadenze, Skillshare offers courses primarily in the arts, along with classes in animation, music, photography, and creative writing, but also offers courses in business, technology, and marketing. The course catalog aims to foster creativity and help people develop creative skills in their careers. There are a number of courses available for free on Skillshare, but to access the full catalog of courses you must pay for a premium membership of $19 per month or $99 per year.

Udemy

Udemy has a collection of 100,000 courses, most of them career-focused, on topics like finance and accounting, office productivity, programming, and marketing. But Udemy also offers courses on topics like music, lifestyle, personal growth, health and wellness. While most Udemy’s courses have an associated fee, you can filter your results to see the courses Udemy free offers; however, you will not be able to earn a certificate or contact the instructor as you would with a paid course.
