Understand why ‘Metal Gear Solid 4’ will NOT be updated for new consoles

Even after so many years, fans continue to hope that the game will receive an update to run on new consoles, such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X. After all, reliving the incredible nostalgia of the old days would be a rewarding experience for franchise enthusiasts.

However, it seems that this possibility is far from being realized and, for now, “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” remains exclusive to those who own PlayStation 3. A news that will certainly frustrate players who want to play the title on more modern platforms.

A failed attempt

Konami had shown interest in making this wish a reality, to the delight of former “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” players, by making the game available for the Xbox 360 console. However, this idea seems to have been abandoned.

The reason for the project’s cancellation is intriguing. Apparently, the main reason is the limited storage capacity of DVDs. Journalist and assistant producer of the game, Ryan Payton, was responsible for bringing this news to the world.

He stated that there was no contractual agreement between Konami and Sony regarding “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” being exclusive to the PS3.

However, the real problem lies in the low capacity of DVDs to support the game, if it were to be transferred to the Xbox 360. In other words, players would need multiple DVDs to enjoy the game experience, as each of them only has 8.3 GB of storage capacity.

This limitation did not exist on the PS3, which used Blu-rays, discs with a capacity of 54 GB, perfect for accommodating the game.

Therefore, the idea of ​​bringing “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” to the Xbox 360 would not be advantageous, as it would end up being too expensive for consumers. The need for multiple DVDs would be a significant barrier. Given this, gamers will have to continue enjoying this iconic masterpiece only on the original console.
