Apple plans to reduce the cost of its new Vision Pro mixed reality headset to around $1,500 by tweaking one of its key components: dual 4K micro LED displays, according to a new report. According to a report by The Elec, citing industry sources, Apple aims to reduce the price of micro OLED displays by 50%. The displays are currently supplied by Sony and account for approximately $456 of the Vision Pro headset’s $1,542 manufacturing cost.

The report claims that Apple is also considering adding other suppliers to its customer list, such as SeeYa and BOE, that can offer lower prices and higher production capacity. However, Apple’s strict quality standards and specifications may pose a problem for these potential suppliers. Apple is likely to stick with Sony as the sole supplier of the next-generation Vision Pro headset.

What do we know about Apple’s next Vision Pro?

The next-generation Vision Pro headset, expected to be released in 2025 or 2026, will be an entry-level version of the device aimed at a broader consumer market. Seeing The Elec’s report, leaker Revegnus said on X (formerly Twitter):Apple is also accelerating research and development for second-generation headphonesand also confirms that the current goal is to reduce the cost of Micro LED displays.

Apple is reportedly planning to make some compromises on the features and performance of the second-generation headset to make it more affordable and accessible. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is considering the following options: use of fewer cameras, lower resolution screens, and a chip currently used in iPhonesInstead of the M series chip that equips MacBooks. Mark Gurman also stated that the device could be called Apple Vision or Apple Vision One to differentiate it from Vision Pro. Frankly, all of this should be treated with caution for now.
