All Hogwarts Legacy spells, types and colors explained

There are many Hogwarts Legacy spells that we know of right now. Various talismans, jinxes and unforgivable curses that you can use to fight and solve puzzles. We’ve listed them all here, with explanations of what they do and what the colors mean.

We have listed the Hogwarts Legacy Unforgivable Curses which players can use in the game separately, considering that inexcusable if you use them – although apparently Hogwarts Legacy doesn’t judge you for doing it.

Hogwarts Legacy spells

These are all the Hogwarts Legacy spells currently announced and what they do:

  • Aberto / Opening spell – A talisman that opens doors, unlike Alohomora’s unlocking spell.
  • Accio / Summon spell – Summons objects that the magnifier can see or visualize.
  • Aguamenti / Water making magic – creates a stream of water from the maker’s staff
  • Alohomora / Unlock spell – A spell that opens locked objects, usually windows and doors.
  • Arresto Momentum / Slowing spell – a spell that can slow the speed of a falling object.
  • Confringo / Blast curse – Causes the object on which it is spilled to explode.
  • Depulso / Banishing spell – Removes anything thrown at it from the wheel. Effectively the opposite of Accio.
  • Falling / Falling charm – Drops anything spilled on it.
  • Diffindo / Divide spell – A spell that cuts absolutely anything cast on it.
  • charm of disappointment – Invisibility spell.
  • Expelliarmus / Disarm spell – When thrown against someone, it blows away anything it holds.

  • Finite / General counter magic – An ‘anti-magic’ spell that can remove, counter or reverse magical effects.
  • Glacius / Freeze spell – A general freeze spell that causes icy air to be expelled from the tip of the caster’s staff.
  • Incendio / Fire magic – Basic fire creation spell.
  • Lumos / Staff lighting talisman – Creates light from the tip of the mage’s wand.
  • Bad luck – Causes used objects to attack a target of the user’s choice.
  • Petrificus Totalus / Whole-body bonding curse – Temporarily paralyzes anyone to whom it is applied.
  • Protego / Shield talisman – Creates a protective barrier from the mage’s staff that can deflect spells and physical attacks.
  • Reducto / Reducer curse – A spell that can shatter anything it hits.
  • Repair / Repair talisman – A repair spell that can repair simple inanimate objects.
  • Revelio charm – A spell that reveals hidden things such as hidden messages or invisible passages and objects.
  • Stun / Stun Spell – A stun spell that can knock out targets and render them unconscious.
  • Levioso / Levitation Spell – A levitation spell that levitates objects in contact with the caster’s staff. The spell that allows objects to float independently in the air is different from Wingardium Levioso.

There’s also an unknown spell that seems to be related to potion making, but it’s unclear whether it’s a ‘magic’ spell or just a decoration of the potion making process.

Hogwarts Legacy unforgivable curses

There are three Hogwarts Legacy unforgivable curses (and often in Harry Potter lore) that you can use:

  • Avada Kedavra / Curse to kill – Causes the target to die instantly.
  • Crucio / Cruciatus or the curse of torture – It causes severe pain in the person who is applied on it.
  • Imperio / Imperius Curse – Puts the target completely under the control of the user.

These curses cannot be learned in school, so the player must first find them and choose to learn them. While there seems to be no moral system to directly punish players for using them, the characters in the game will react to you when you use them and their use can affect the quest and activities. Technically, using any of these even once should send you to Azkaban (wizard prison) for life, according to Potter knowledge.

Hogwarts Legacy spell colors and types

There are four spell colors in Hogwarts Legacy that denote different types of spells:

  • yellow spells Control spells like Levioso
  • purple spells Power spells like Accio
  • red spells Damage spells like Confringo
  • gray spells are ‘essential’ spells or non-optional spells you need to progress through

The main benefit of these spell colors in Hogwarts Legacy comes when fighting other wizards or witches – shields of a certain color can only be broken by a spell of the same color.

How many spells are there in Hogwarts Legacy?

According to a study, there are 26 spells in Hogwarts Legacy. developer showcase the blurry view above was showing the enchantments page in the game. Since we currently have 25 confirmed spells and a potion-making spell that hasn’t been clarified yet, we may have confirmed all the spells you can use in-game. However, it could also be just a coincidence, as it’s not clear what stage of the game the developer showcase was at when the hidden spell page was revealed.
