Gurranq is a formidable figure in Northeast Caelid, but it’s essential in the Elden Ring if you plan to use his Faith stat properly, and to do that you’ll need Deathroots, special hidden items with locations all over the map. to beat certain mage boss fights. There are a total of eight Deathroots around the Elden Ring, but most of them are pretty hard to reach, even if you know where they are. Once you have a Deathroot, return to Roundtable Hold and talk to Dead Hunter D, the armored figure sitting at the table (check the cemetery west of Summonwater Village if it’s not there). It’s pretty quiet, but if you have a Deathroot it will mark a location on your map in East Limgrave – a portal to a friend.

This portal will take you to the giant mass of fur and teeth known as Gurranq, Beast Clergyman at Bestial Sanctum, at the northernmost point of Dragonbarrow. Although it looks scary, Gurranq only wants your Deathroots (for now) and will give you a reward for each one brought to him. These rewards are often Faith-based in nature, as Gurranq specializes in a particular type of animal magic. Don’t worry about protecting your deathroots – they literally can’t be used for any purpose other than that.

Gurranq gives a bounty for each Deathroot delivered, but the fourth one has a type capture associated with it…which we’ll discuss below. Once you find one, teleport to the closest Grace Site and deliver it. You will receive these rewards in this order.

The boss fight is actually with Gurranq himself, because while it’s fine to enjoy Deathroots in moderation, Beast Clergyman struggles to get over him and eventually becomes temporarily brutal under their influence. Let’s not go too far – he’s a real beast when he does, moving incredibly fast with a combination of stuns and wide-ranged attacks. Even experienced players can be killed in a single hit, and his spell can still deal damage even with your shield up. The good news is that you don’t need to beat him – once you get about a fifth of his health, he will suddenly scream and pass out. Next time you visit Sanctum, it will return to normal as if it never happened and accept more Deathroots. without temporary mental health loss.

The best thing you can do in combat is to distract yourself with Ash Spirit Summons. The high-level ones can do a lot of damage and get his attention while you’re doing ranged attacks, or at least come from behind for quick cuts. You’ll want to be quick in this shootout – Gurranq can pierce any defense with ease, so shields aren’t much help here.

If you’re careful/lucky, you can also anger the giant monster gargoyle angel, Black Kindred Blade, at the door and have him attack through the doorway. If you manage to do this while Gurranq is in range, it will deal massive damage to him, but the difficulty of setting up this combo may not be any harder than hitting him yourself.
