‘Aquaman 2’ still dominates, while ‘Turma da Mônica’ faces challenges

The first films from ‘Turma da Mônica’, notably ‘Turma da Mônica: Laços’ and its sequel ‘Turma da Mônica: Lições’, won the hearts of the Brazilian public by offering a charming and faithful film adaptation of the classic characters created by Mauricio de Sousa.

These productions were praised for their genuine approach to the characters, the moving narrative and the charisma of the young actors who brought the characters to life. Monica, Cebolinha, Cascão and Magali. Check out the trailer!

However, the scenario changed with the recent release of ‘Turma da Mônica Jovem: Reflexos do Medo’.

The reception for this film is far from the previous success, and several factors seem to contribute to the unfavorable result.

Low box office

The imminent failure of the new ‘Turma da Mônica’ film is evident when analyzing the box office performance, which shows no signs of growth.

In contrast, the film ‘Aquaman 2: The Lost Kingdom’ maintains its leadership at the Brazilian box office for the fifth consecutive week.

Furthermore, another Brazilian feature film, ‘Minha Irmã e Eu’, with Tata Werneck and Ingrid Guimarães, remains firm in the competition, occupying second place in the ranking, followed by ‘Wish: The Power of Wishes’ in third.

Reasons for the failure of ‘Turma da Mônica’

The main controversy involves Mauricio de Sousa Produções’ decision to negotiate ‘Turma da Mônica’ and ‘Turma da Mônica Jovem’ as independent franchises for different studios.

This choice resulted in substantial changes in the cast, approach and production team of the new film.

The public, even before the premiere, expressed disapproval of the cast change. The affinity established with the original actors, who played crucial roles in the previous films, became an ingrained expectation.

This abrupt change impacted the cohesion between the films, generating resistance from fans, who demonstrated a marked preference for the original performers.

Criticism was also focused on the new film’s setback. While the first ones were widely approved, ‘Turma da Mônica Jovem: Reflexos do Medo’ received mostly negative reviews.

Many criticisms point to the lack of narrative cohesion, changes in character dynamics and other elements that clash with the spirit of previous films.

This setback highlights the complexity of managing franchises and how strategic decisions can shape public perception.

Mauricio de Sousa Produções, seeking immediate profit by negotiating parts of the franchise with different studios, faced the challenge of maintaining consistency and public acceptance.

Ultimately, the failure of ‘Turma da Mônica Jovem: Reflexos do Medo’ highlights the importance of listening to fan feedback, understanding established expectations, and maintaining a coherent vision when expanding cinematic universes based on beloved characters.
