Many Samsung smartphone users use the Samsung Messages app to send and receive messages. Meanwhile, WhatsApp and Telegram continue to exist for certain people and friends. Unfortunately, some Samsung users are facing an error where they are unable to send messages to anyone. When they type the message and hit send, the phones give a sending error.
While WhatsApp and Telegram maintain conversations, texts or SMS are also required. For example, verifying your number for a service provider or requesting some basic services. Either way, you may want to fix this error and we are here to help.
At this point, we can assume that you checked if your phone is in Airplane mode by mistake. Text messages need a carrier signal to function normally.
Let’s start.
1. Network Problem
Network problems can cause all sorts of problems. You can use an app like Open Signal to find nearby towers and move closer to get a better signal. Do people (maybe friends) in the same area with the same carrier get good coverage? Can they send and receive messages? This will help you figure out if the problem is on your end (your location or your phone) or the mobile operator.
2. Check Carrier Uptime
The carrier may be undergoing maintenance or there may be some bugs causing downtime and subsequent issues such as Samsung messages not sending errors. You can check the downtime for several services in Down Detector.
If this is your mobile service provider’s downtime, there is little you can do.
3. Reinsert the SIM
I know this is old school but it might just be helpful. Take your SIM card out of the tray, wait a few minutes and then reinsert it to check if this fixes the message error on your Samsung phone.
4. Default Messaging App
What is your default messaging app and how many have you installed? Some apps, like Truecaller, offer messaging features and constantly show annoying pop-ups hoping you’ll switch. Sometimes users don’t know that the messaging feature is part of the package. Open the Samsung Messages app. Faced with a notification saying your default messaging app is another app?
You can switch to Samsung Messages on the same screen by tapping OK to confirm. You can also change the default messaging app option from Settings > Applications > Messages > Messaging app and select Messages from Samsung there. I use SMS Organizer instead because it’s so much better than anything I’ve tried so far.
4. Unregister iMessage
Have you recently switched from iPhone to Android phone? The Apple ecosystem uses iMessages, but that won’t work on your Samsung phone or any other Android for that matter. Before you can send messages using Samsung, you may need to unregister iMessage on the SIM.
Insert SIM in your iPhone and open Settings > Messages > turn off iMessage on your iPhone.
5. Clear Message App Cache
Messages is an app like any other and it stores all kinds of data on your phone for it to work properly. Over time, this data can get corrupted and lead to errors like the one you encounter where the Samsung Messages app is not sending text messages.
Stage 1: Open Settings and go to Apps and search for Messages and then open it.
Step 2: Tap on Storage and then at the bottom you will find two options for Clear data and Clear cache.
This will not delete your messages or other personal data. You can do it safely for this app and others as well.
6. Reset Network Settings
Resetting Network Settings only deletes saved Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, VPN and mobile network details. No other personal data will be touched. Mobile network details will be uploaded automatically via messaging app. You will need to manually reconnect to your Wi-Fi network and Bluetooth devices. Be sure to write down the Wi-Fi passwords.
Stage 1: Open Settings and go to General management > Reset > Reset network settings. Tap the blue button that says Reset settings and confirm if asked.
This much. Restart the Samsung Messages app and it has set itself up provided you have a decent network connection and signal.
7. Use Third Party App
At GT we like to use SMS Organizer from Microsoft. There are many tips and tricks in the nifty little app. Some great features include copy OTP from notification center, set reminders, create folders to save messages separately, get automatic reminders for bill payments and more. It comes with a Gmail-like interface where messages are filtered in different tabs based on content. Check it below.
Continue Messaging
The Samsung Messages app has come a long way and they offer most of the features that other major messaging apps offer. It’s good to see them evolve and continue to build on that. Still, it’s always good to have options in an emergency or when an app isn’t working.
If the problem persists, contact your service provider or visit the nearest branch. I wouldn’t recommend formatting, but it’s not really necessary. You are free to experiment. Back up everything before continuing.
