Open Quick Launch Camera

If it’s not enabled by default, Samsung’s “double tap on the home button” to quickly launch the camera is probably our favorite feature. Whether you’re in Gmail, surfing the web, or even quickly hang up, double-clicking the home button instantly launches the camera.

The Galaxy S7 has a new 12-megapixel camera that takes great photos indoors and outdoors and has one of the fastest autofocuses we’ve ever seen. Double-tap the homepage, instantly focus and take a photo faster than ever before on a smartphone.

If you double-tap the home page and the camera won’t launch, here’s how to turn this feature on. Turn on the camera, hit the “gear-shaped” settings button in the top corner and scroll down to open “Quick Launch”. This is inside the camera app settings, not just the regular settings menu. While you’re here, turn off the camera shutter sounds and go to “video size” and change the recording from 1080p to higher or even 4k video recording if you want.

Switch Camera to SD Card Storage

A key feature coming back to the Galaxy S7 is the option to add a micro SD card for additional storage. We recommend everyone add one, as 32GB isn’t too much. When you insert a 128GB or even 200GB micro SD card, make sure you choose to save photos to micro SD card instead of internal storage when prompted.

Go to Camera app, tap settings again and go to “storage location” and set it to “SD Card” instead of internal storage. Once you start taking tons of photos and you will or record video you will want everything to go to the micro SD card and not the 24GB out of the box.

Disable Briefing

Out of the box, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge have something called “Briefing” when you swipe to the left of the home screen. This is a news app that gathers information from multiple news sources in one place. It’s a nice option, but very laggy and something I disable on every Samsung device I own.

Long press on an empty spot on the home screen (this allows you to change the grid size, wallpaper and add widgets) and swipe left which is “Briefing” and toggle it off. Now that left side panel will disappear and owners can drag app icons there to have another page for their favorite apps instead of the slow and infrequently used Briefing app taking up space, slowing down battery and performance.

Do Not Disturb Setup

Do Not Disturb is a great feature that everyone should use, and now that the Galaxy S7 runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, it’s easier and more customizable than ever before. Get a good night’s sleep and don’t be disturbed by your phone. My Do Not Disturb feature automatically turns on at 10:45 PM each night and turns off at 7 AM.

Start and open with a specific program. Owners can customize it so that alarms can still go off (so you’re not late for work) and even exceptions like certain friends or family members can call or text you, everything else being silenced until morning. We strongly recommend that you use it.

Add Multiple Fingerprints

Galaxy S7 suggests setting up the fingerprint scanner during the setup process. Something everyone should use for a faster experience and enhanced security. However, once you’re done, this is another Galaxy S7 setting that you should change.

Go in and add three more fingerprints. We recommend both the thumb and index finger. This way, the Galaxy S7 can be unlocked with both hands while using it or with the index finger while the phone is sitting on the table. Just follow the instructions and do the same to teach all four fingerprints and you’re ready for the future.

Enable or Disable Edge Panel

Another Galaxy S7 Edge tweak you might want to consider is the Edge panel. This is the sliding tray of options and extra controls on the curved edge of the screen. It’s nice to have shortcuts to popular apps or people, but most users never use that either. Some keep it and love the Edge, while others just wanted the Galaxy S7 Edge’s bigger screen and extra battery life.

As a result, users must swipe open Edge, hit the gear-shaped settings button, and close the Edge panel completely. Or if you plan to use it, customize all the options here as well. Disable Bloatware

Unfortunately, most phones in the United States are loaded with bloatware, which takes 2-3GB if not more than 32GB of internal storage. That way, any Amazon, Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile apps that splashed into the app tray will be gone. We disable them all and they disappear.

Go go and select all pre-installed apps and tap . They will no longer work, but they will not waste space in the application tray either. I disabled everything from Amazon, AT&T, AT&T Data Usage Manager, Lookout Mobile Security and a few others. Do not remove too much or what you do not understand, as the phone or some features will not work correctly when disabled. If you want any undo, go to the same area and “enable” it.

One of our favorite features of recent Galaxy devices is the Samsung Theme store. It is not in the app tray by default so go and browse through all the themes. These will completely change the whole look and feel of your Galaxy S7.

I personally use a theme called “Material Blue” by Samer Zayer for $1.39 because it makes the Galaxy S7 look like a stock Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow device similar to Google’s Nexus phones. It is one of the brightest themes available. Countless other bright, colour, animated, black and white or other options are available. In fact, there is something for everyone. Enjoy a unique looking phone, then set it back to “Default” if you want to go back out of the box.

Turn on NFC and use Samsung Pay

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge feature both Samsung Pay and Android Pay. Similar to Apple Pay, we can use the phone to pay anywhere in the United States instead of carrying a wallet. However, unlike Android or Apple Pay, which supports the feature and only works in 5-10% of retail stores that have NFC, the Samsung Galaxy S7 can use our recommended Samsung Pay.
